Obviously I've slowed way way down on my updates...still spending most of each day at the hospital with my friend and his family, but slowly beginning to adjust life to get back to work, to writing, to storytelling from AmaXhosa perspectives, to challenging the incredibly deeply rooted racism in South African schools, hospitals, air, life.
And who would be surprised that when my friend was able to shift from the trauma ward hospital, a not-so-clean run-down public hospital with great doctors but not-so-great service to the rehabilitation hospital, which is cleaner, nicer, has more access and support and services, but...is of course private, well, that's when the seemingly 95% of color patient base shifted to a 95% white patient base. Because "public" health means less "health" and private means money and racism means life is just nicer as a white person (or in this case, a brown American with access to wealth) because money is exploited stolen taken forced from Black bodies and translated into safety security niceness that EVERYONE should have but ONLY relatively privileged are allowed access to and this happens all over the world but particularly effectively here
in South Africa
where racism is the norm
and damn near everyone White says
history.
Welcome to Race Has Nothing To Do WIth You
Much of my life is consumed by schools, so what I write is directly related to educators, students, advocates, parents, and caring people. But I am human, and I write about what moves me. I write so I can survive the hatred, ignorance, and blatant apathy towards low income people of color. Read on, and if you love or hate what I write, let me know. Peace.
